How to Use XTools Studio for the S1 and P2 Lasers

XTools Studio is the powerful software platform that controls both our xTool S1 and xTool P2 laser cutters here at Reforge. Whether you’re engraving intricate designs or cutting through materials, mastering XTools Studio will help you get the most out of these incredible machines.

Getting Started with XTools Studio

XTools Studio is available as both a desktop application and a web-based platform. For the best performance and access to all features, we recommend downloading the desktop version from the xTool website. The software works seamlessly with both the S1 and P2 models, automatically detecting which machine you’re connected to.

Connecting Your Laser

Both the S1 and P2 can connect to XTools Studio via WiFi or USB. WiFi connection is generally more convenient for everyday use, while USB provides a more stable connection for complex or long-running jobs. To connect via WiFi, make sure your laser is powered on and connected to the same network as your computer. The software will automatically detect available machines.

Importing Your Design

XTools Studio supports a wide variety of file formats including SVG, DXF, PNG, JPG, and PDF. Simply drag and drop your file into the workspace or use the import button. The software includes intelligent background removal for images and automatic vectorization tools to convert raster images into clean vector paths.

Material Settings

One of XTools Studio’s best features is its extensive material library. Both the S1 and P2 have pre-configured settings for dozens of common materials including various woods, acrylics, leather, cardboard, and fabric. Select your material from the library, and the software automatically sets the optimal power, speed, and number of passes.

For materials not in the library, you can create custom settings and save them for future use. We recommend starting with lower power settings and doing test cuts on scrap material to dial in the perfect parameters.

Key Differences: S1 vs P2

While XTools Studio works similarly for both machines, there are some important differences to note:

  • Work Area: The S1 has a compact work area ideal for smaller projects, while the P2 offers a much larger bed for bigger pieces.
  • Enclosed Design: The S1 is fully enclosed with a viewing window, making it safer and containing fumes better. The P2 is an open-bed design that requires more ventilation consideration.
  • Camera Preview: Both machines feature built-in cameras for precise positioning, but the interface differs slightly in XTools Studio based on which machine you’re using.

Setting Up Your Cut

After importing your design and selecting your material, use the camera preview to position your design on your material. The camera gives you a real-time view of your work surface. You can use the “Trace” feature to automatically detect the boundaries of your material.

Assign processing modes to different elements of your design. XTools Studio supports multiple processing types:

  • Cut: Vector cutting through material
  • Engrave: Raster engraving for images and filled areas
  • Score: Light surface marking without cutting through

Running Your Job

Before sending your job to the laser, always use the “Preview” function to see the toolpath and estimated time. Check the framing feature to ensure your design fits within your material boundaries. When you’re ready, hit “Start” and monitor the first few passes to ensure everything is working correctly.

Safety Reminders

Always ensure proper ventilation is active before starting any laser job. Never leave the laser unattended while operating. Keep the laser lens and mirrors clean for optimal performance. If you notice any unusual sounds, smells, or flames, stop the job immediately and alert Reforge staff.

Tips for Success

  • Clean the lens before each session for best results
  • Use the autofocus feature to ensure proper focal distance
  • Save your custom material settings for consistency
  • Test on scrap material before committing to your final piece
  • Organize your design layers in XTools Studio for easier management
  • Use the simulation feature to preview your job before running it
